Fanping Yi was born in Beijing, China, on February 14, 1964. She graduated from North China University of Water Conservancy and Electric Power with a bachelor degree in engineering in 1984. After graduation, she worked as an engineer in China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Institute.  In 1989, she moved to Japan and studied in the University of Tokyo, where her husband, Fred Yi, was pursuing his doctoral degree.  She worked in Matsunaga Geo Survey, Ltd., of Japan until the end of 1992. In December 2002, she immigrated to Los Angeles of United States to join her loved husband. Since given the birth to her daughter, Karen, in 1993, she had worked as a housewife and mother, dumbly contributed her youth to the family. She was diagnosed with gallbladder cancer in the cholecystectomy on September 30, 2014, and later found that the cancer tumor had spread to the whole body.  With a weak body, she was of strong volition and belief that supported her to fight with the rarest and most difficult cancer and allowed her to witness the entire processes of dental school application, interview, and acceptance of her daughter. She was able to attend the commencement of UC Berkeley on May 16, 2015, and to attend the White Coat Ceremony of UCLA Dental School on September 16, 2015, as her last goal as a mother for her beloved daughter.  On September 18, two days after the ceremony, she was sent to hospital by ambulance.  After fighting with the stubborn cancer for one year and 5 days, she passed away at 20:51 on October 5th, 2015, in Loma Linda University Medical Center at age of 51.  LLUMC is located in a desert area of southern California and is perennially droughty. On October 5th, 2015, the sky was cloudy from morning followed by a downpour in the afternoon. THE SKY WAS CRYING FOR HER LEAVING!
